Mattel is to relaunch Barbie in the UK with new packaging and
marketing as part of a global initiative to market the 50-year-old doll brand as
a “fashion” icon.
The makeover, which also covers point of sale promotion and the
brand’s website, is part of a global strategy to provide “a consistent approach”
in the way Barbie dolls are packaged and marketed.
New packaging will be introduced from the end of July ahead of a
television campaign breaking mid-August. The company aims to have “fully
consistent” packaging by spring/summer 2010.
Erica Vankamp, marketing director for Barbie, says the new
concept is “testament to the brand’s commitment to bringing Barbie to life”.
Mattel has partnered with Hamley’s, which sees the “Barbie area”
at the London toy store given a revamp in line with the new look.

Barbie's Malibu Beach House
On the eve of her 50th birthday, interior decorator Jonathan Adler has decked
out a real-life 3,500-square-foot pad overlooking the Pacific Ocean to look like
the blond doll's outrageous home.
Adler, who was commissioned by toy maker Mattel Inc. to decorate the house
for Monday's party, said outfitting the sleek mansion (a property that's
frequently rented for film and photography shoots) took six months of planning
and a few weeks to install.
"Barbie was a dream client because she doesn't exist as a person," Adler
said. "She exists as fantasy and is the perfect client because she's always
happy and fun and loves everything. I thought to myself, 'How would Barbie
live?' What I thought was Barbie would have a house that is glamorous,
kittenish, chic, colorful and happy — as well as functional."
Adler lined Barbie's bedroom with wall-to-wall pink carpeting emblazoned with
her initial. The closet is filled with 50 pairs of pink peep-toe heels while her
kitchen is stocked with cupcake-making ingredients. An in-house museum features
25 vintage Barbie dolls on display. In the garage? A pink Volkswagen New Beetle
with a motorized pop-up vanity in the trunk.
"I think this really is Barbie's Malibu Dream House because the setting is so
incredibly dreamy and ethereal," Adler said. "We're perched on a cliff in Malibu
overlooking the ocean. It's a fantasyland for anyone. It was difficult to find
the house to celebrate Barbie's 50th birthday because it had to be the ultimate
Malibu house, and I think we found it."
Decorating Barbie's real-world dream home, which will be the site Monday of a
star-studded soiree celebrating the doll's birthday, was a dream for Adler, the
potter and decorator who has served as head judge on Bravo's "Top Design." He
said Mattel gave him access to the company's archives, including a look at all
of Barbie's various dream homes over the years.
Following the festivities, most of Barbie's custom decor will be shipped to
the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas to furnish a special pink-tinted Barbie
Suite that will be available for bachelorette parties, birthdays or anyone who
wants to live like Barbie. Other items will be available from the "Jonathan
Adler Loves Barbie" collection launching in September.
Adler's favorite furnishings are hanging in the living room: an original Andy
Warhol portrait of Barbie valued at over $200,000 and a chandelier — designed by
"Project Runway" contestant Chris March — that's made up of over 30 blond wigs
and took more than 60 hours to craft. Adler also admires a one-of-a-kind
black-and-white wall mirror created with 64 dolls.
So where's Ken?
"Ken's around, but does she need Ken?" said Adler. "No."

Barbie doll is getting a new face, which will be unveiled on March 9,
the 50th anniversary of the doll's debut at the New York Toy Fair.
The new face sculpt will be revealed in a "throwback" doll, which will be
Barbie in a black-and-white striped bathing suit, similar to the one seen on the
first Barbie doll. The doll is described as a "modern interpretation of the
original 1959 doll."
For the week of March 9-14, participating retailers will sell the doll at the
1959 Barbie's price -- $3 a doll.
As part of Barbie's 50th birthday, Mattel will hold a pink-carpet birthday
bash at full-size Barbie Malibu Dream House – a 3,500 square foot house in
Malibu decorated by "Happy Chic" interior designer Jonathan Adler.
The house features a Barbie museum which displays the original 1959 doll and
several of the most famous dolls from throughout the years, various Barbie-size
Dream Houses from throughout the decades and several noteworthy pieces of Barbie
art.

Fiat has a new set of wheels for Barbie's 50th

MILAN, Italy — A special shocking pink
Fiat 500 has been created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic
Barbie doll. Fiat said the showcar, done in conjunction with Mattel, will be
rolled out on March 9 during the doll's anniversary celebrations here.
Despite the inroads made by Barbie during her 50-year career — she donned a
Ferrari driver's uniform with racing helmet for the 2000 Scuderia Ferrari
Barbie collector's toy — the Fiat 500 will be driven by Ken, according to a
statement by the company. "Barbie will be aboard and she'll have her own
special driver: Ken, of course," said Fiat.
Barbie has had her pick of wheels in the past, including a light pink
Chevrolet Corvette convertible. She has also had a long fashion history with
automakers, most notably Ferrari. There are several editions of Ferrari
Barbie, including a 2001 model wearing a red evening gown and a silvery hair
ornament in the shape of the Prancing Horse logo.
The Fiat 500 Barbie car gets such touches as crystals on the hubcaps, outer
window moldings and antenna. The doll's silhouette is on the car's pillars. It
also comes with a cover "featuring the distinctive '60s version of the Fiat
500 and a Barbie autograph," said Fiat. No word on horsepower upgrades.
Inside Line says: We'll probably have to wait for
Barbie's 100th-anniversary celebration before she actually gets to drive the
car. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

Celebrating 50 years in 2009,
Barbie doll’s famous face and head-turning
style have made her much more than the most popular doll in the world. For
five decades, Barbie has inspired girls of all ages to dream, discover and
celebrate their girlhood – from
fashion to fantasy – all in a world without limits. This year, Barbie will
host its biggest worldwide celebration of the brand ever – including a Dream
House full of marquee partners and pink carpet events. Girls of all ages will be
able to celebrate with exciting events and fashion shows in major global
capitals, as well as experience the brand through exciting new initiatives at
retail, online and through a collection of celebratory, must-have products.
Partners include Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Jonathan Adler, Bloomingdale’s,
Stila, Facebook, and many more to be announced in the coming weeks.
“Barbie’s legendary 50th year will be the most epic, global celebration in the
brand’s history,” said Richard Dickson, General Manager and Senior Vice
President, Barbie. “There are very few brands in the world that serve as a
reflection of fashion, culture and aspiration like the Barbie brand, and this
allows us the honor of partnering and celebrating alongside an unprecedented
roster of the world’s most famous and respected names. This is certainly a
celebration of 50 fabulous years; however, Barbie’s 50th Anniversary is also
very much about unveiling the next chapter for the Barbie brand and celebrating
our future.”

honoring the 50th anniversary of the sale of Barbie dolls.
A novelty will be a big fashion show outfits for women inspired by Barbie
that will be made by 50 designers. The CFDA will decide which designers will
take part by selecting among 350 of its members.
The rumor is that famous designers Vera Wang and Jeremy Scott already
confirmed their cooperation on “project Barbie”. Wang will reportedly design
wedding gowns for real, live models and the same, but smaller versions for the
dolls.
It has not been confirmed, but word is Mattel already has prepared a
Barbie make-up line called “Plastic Smooth” which will be launched next year.
The company is also planning to open a big Barbie house in Shanghai.

December 16, 2008
We are coming up on Barbie's 50th and 2009 will be an exciting
year for sure. We will be posting tidbits as we come across them, but
always feel free to
email us any items you might see so we can share them here.
As little girls we had boxes and boxes full of Barbie and her vast wardrobe,
but now as grown women we wish we could afford just a smidgen of what Barbie
had. As Barbie embarks on her 50th year her closet is about to get even more
envious.
WWD reports that Barbie has big plans to celebrate her 50th birthday in
style with Christian Louboutin designing her a pair of pumps in her iconic shade
of pink: Barbie Pantone 219 Pink.
If Barbie pink Loubou’s make your palms sweat with excitement, you might
start to drool when you read this: Mattel Inc. will host a fashion show
featuring 50 as-yet-undisclosed designers. Each designer will create a
Barbie-inspired look at New York Fashion week come February and all 50 models
will be wearing the Louboutin Barbie pink pumps. This news has got our
imaginations flashing back to all the stylish outfits we used to dress Barbie in
and we can’t wait to see what the great fashion minds will put her in.

YEAH FOR BARBIE!!!
Toy giant Mattel Inc., after a four-year legal
dispute with MGA Entertainment Inc., touted its win in the case Wednesday
after a federal judge banned MGA from making and selling its pouty-lipped and
hugely popular Bratz dolls.
"It's a pretty sweeping victory," Mattel attorney
Michael Zeller said. "They have no right to use Bratz for any goods or
services at all."
U.S. District Judge Stephen Larson rocked the toy
industry with his order that MGA must immediately stop manufacturing Bratz. He
allowed MGA to wait until the holiday season ends to remove the toys from
store shelves.
The decision was a stunning defeat for MGA, which
exploded onto the tween scene in 2001 with the edgy dolls and made hundreds of
millions in profits, giving Mattel's more classic doll-diva Barbie a run for
her money.
The ruling, issued in federal court in Riverside,
followed a jury's finding that Bratz designer Carter Bryant developed the
concept for the dolls while working for Mattel.
The same jury later awarded Mattel $10 million
for copyright infringement and $90 million for breach of contract after a
lengthy trial stemming from Mattel's 2004 lawsuit ended in August.
MGA spokesman Sandra Ravan did not immediately
return a call for comment late Wednesday. It was unclear if MGA planned to
appeal Larson's ruling.
Mattel has fought to neutralize the Bratz line
for years. The dolls -- with their huge lips, pug noses, almond-shaped eyes
and coquettish figures -- were an instant hit with young girls. MGA had
taken Bryant's original four dolls and spun out a line of more than 40
characters, complete with accessories and related toys such as Bratz Boyz,
Bratz Petz and Baby Bratz.
El Segundo-based Mattel has seen sales of Barbie
-- once a rite of passage for American girls -- slide since the doe-eyed
Bratz dolls first came on the scene. Domestic sales of Barbie were down 15
percent in 2007.
Both sides had a lot riding on the judge's
decision and had worried about the impact of any ruling during the holiday
shopping season.
The judge's injunction named all 40 dolls in the
Bratz line, including the four originals -- Yasmine, Chloe, Sasha and Jade.
Larson also ordered MGA to reimburse its vendors and distributors for the
cost of the dolls and all shipping charges for sending them back.
During trial, Mattel attorneys said MGA made
nearly $778 million on the Bratz line since it was introduced seven years
ago, and company Chief Executive Isaac Larian made $696 million through June
-- but MGA insisted the profits were much less.
The post-trial dispute that prompted Wednesday's
ruling centered on whether the jury found that only the first generation of
four Bratz dolls infringed on Mattel's copyright or whether all the dolls in
the line are in violation.
The jury verdict form only asked panelists to
find whether there was infringement and assign a dollar reward, but did not
ask them to specify which dolls among the dozens MGA made violated the law.
Los Angeles-based MGA, which no longer makes the
first-generation dolls, argued that the later toys in the Bratz line don't
violate the copyright and it could continue to sell them.
MGA attorney Raoul Kennedy argued that Larson
had the discretion to determine which dolls violated Mattel's copyright.
Mattel's attorneys disagreed, saying the court does not have the authority
to interpret the jury's findings after the fact.

The US's No. 1 toymaker has unveiled Barbie Girls, a multi-pronged brand
that features a free web site,
BarbieGirls.com, that will allow children to create their own virtual
characters, design their own room and try on clothes at a cyber mall.
This year Mattel will introduce a Barbie-inspired handheld MP3 music device
to interact with the website and unlock even more content. Mattel hopes that
by blending girls' love of music, fashion and the internet, it will keep
10-year-old girls interested in the iconic name.
The launch of Barbie Girl is the latest effort by a toy company to make its
brand more interactive with the internet and reclaim children who are growing
out of toys faster and seeking other play options, like online chatting and
iPods.

We apologize for all the updating/chances on
the 2008 line, as we have not received all
the information; we are updating as
changes are brought to our attention.
Because we cannot confirm availability on
the European and Japanese exclusive (Shop
Girl and The Artist), for the time being we
have stopped taking orders until we can
confirm availability. We just learned
today that we will NOT be receiving our
order of Lady of the Unicorn, and sincerely
apologize for this. It is extremely
challenging when US dealers try and source
product that is not for the US market.
We do not mean or want to disappoint our
customers, and in view of this we will only
be able to honor a limited amount of the
Shop Girl/Artist. We do NOT have any
final numbers as of today, but will be sure
to email our customers who have preordered
when we get confirmation and if there is a
chance the order won't be filled.
We appreciate your business and patience.
